Los Angeles Clippers owner Steve Ballmer has decided to accept the NBA’s punishment following the league’s investigation into salary-cap violations connected to star forward Kawhi Leonard.
Ballmer had initially indicated that the Clippers would challenge the league’s findings and penalties. However, he has now taken a more conciliatory position, saying the organization will comply with the punishment and move forward.
The NBA handed the Clippers a record $30 million fine, while the franchise will also lose five future first-round draft picks. Ballmer himself has been suspended from NBA and team activities for one year.

The Clippers originally criticized the league’s investigation and questioned the conclusions reached by the NBA.

What Did the NBA Investigation Find?
The NBA investigation centered on allegations that the Clippers helped Leonard receive additional income through sponsorship arrangements that violated salary-cap regulations.
The league concluded that the organization played a role in facilitating business agreements between Leonard and several companies associated with the Clippers.
Four corporate sponsors were identified in the investigation: Aspiration, Boingo Wireless, Daktronics and Lockton Insurance.
According to the findings, the Clippers helped create opportunities for Leonard to receive sponsorship income and allegedly provided assistance involving expenses connected to Leonard and his representatives.
The investigation also found that the organization failed to properly report certain efforts involving Leonard’s former business manager.
Clippers Face Major Draft-Pick Penalty
The financial punishment is only one part of the consequences facing Los Angeles.
The Clippers will surrender a first-round pick in each of the 2029 through 2033 NBA Drafts, creating a significant long-term cost for the franchise.
First-round selections are among the NBA’s most valuable assets because they provide teams with opportunities to acquire young talent and can also be used in future trades.

Steve Ballmer Suspended for One Year

Clippers president of business operations Gillian Zucker received a one-year suspension, while president of basketball operations Lawrence Frank was suspended for six months.
Leonard was separately fined $700,000.

Record Fine Makes NBA History
The Clippers’ $30 million penalty is by far the largest team fine ever issued by the NBA.
It surpasses the previous record of $3.5 million, which was imposed on the Minnesota Timberwolves in 2000 for salary-cap violations.
