But the most glaring reason is Russell Westbrook’s diminished play. The embattled former MVP played some of the worst basketball of his career while wearing Purple and Gold, so the Lakers are looking to trade him for a while. One of the biggest questions the front office must consider is how it can move Westbrook and what it will have to give up to do so. Lately, rumors have LA sending Westbrook to the Utah Jazz in exchange for Jordan Clarkson. Utah is undergoing a rebuild, so it would make sense to move the 30-year-old point guard because of his market value as a proven scorer and his expiring contract. But according to ESPN’s Zach Lowe, the Jazz are “super reluctant” to trade Clarkson, who has become a fan favorite and is a vital part of a team with an astonishing 5-2 record.

“I’ve heard the same things that other people have reported that they’re super reluctant to change Clarkson,” Lowe said on his The Lowe Post podcast. “They like him a lot for whatever reason, so I’d consider him the least likely of all these Jazz guys to trade.” Clarkson, the 2020-21 sixth man of the year, is in the starting lineup for the first time in seven years, and it has been a game-changer for team chemistry. He is averaging 17.3 points, 4.1 rebounds and 5.0 assists per game and is drawing attention for the way his improved overall play has helped the Jazz stay in the win column. Utah coach Will Hardy told reporters after Saturday’s win over the Memphis Grizzlies.

“That’s all Jordan. I didn’t beg him to be an ace. I think I tried to explain to him where he fits in this group and try to empower him that way. I told him if the game tells him to shoot 10 times in a row, so he should shoot 10 in a row, but I think he has more to offer us in that regard, and we saw some great passes from him tonight. I had to beg Jordan to play that way. He’s been amazing all year, during throughout training camp, and then at the start of the season. So credit him.” From the looks of it, Utah wants to keep Clarkson, but that doesn’t mean it won’t move him to the right deal, which is another problem for the Lakers. LA has little to offer Jazz or anyone else in a possible Westbrook deal.

The Lakers can only sweeten Westbrook’s pot with a first-round pick in 2027, which isn’t enough for most teams. But time changes everything, just like winning or losing. As teams rack up losses, either because they aren’t very good or want to miss out on the chance to recruit generational talent like Victor Wembanyama or Scoot Henderson, more doors will open for the Lakers and Westbrook. But to get to that point, Westbrook will have to play well enough to show teams he still has it. Based on the last two games, this plan could be heading in the right direction.

Thanks to Westbrook’s 18 points, eight rebounds and eight assists, the Lakers took their first win of the season on Sunday against the Denver Nuggets at home. For the first time in a long time, Westbrook heard cheers from the home crowd, which was a welcome sound for him, his team and his prospects moving forward. Lakers head coach Darvin Ham said after the game. “I’m so happy man. I can’t even imagine what that kid is going through. One of the biggest things about me getting this job was for him to get the respect he deserved because a lot of what happened last year wasn’t his fault. and all the blame was laid on him. “I told him, ‘Just listen to me, believe me friends, I’m going to put you in a position to succeed with the group, but you have to put the group first. either me or mine. It has to be. us, our, we’, and he did it.”

Embracing the role of sixth man has been difficult for Westbrook, but in the win over Denver, he was energetic, pressing and making better decisions with the ball. The Lakers desperately need this from the veteran point guard, not only to compete, but also to have better options if they decide to trade him. “One thing I will never let go is people outside of my family, the people who support me, take away my joy,” Westbrook told reporters on Sunday. “Always have fun and embrace this game, and embrace the gift I was given to be able to go out and compete. “And yes, winning makes you feel better about yourself. But when you’re losing, it’s not so much fun. Tonight was a night where we could take a chance.” Westbrook is right. Winning makes everyone feel better. If the Lakers enjoy their first win of the year and keep winning, the noise around the former UCLA standout will calm down, and maybe they can get through it.

But if they still want to trade Westbrook, they should definitely try for Clarkson. Many might point to the fact that they play with the same kind of shoot-first mentality, but the difference between them is that Clarkson can shoot. He can take some of the pressure off LeBron James and Anthony Davis because there’s no way a defender can get behind him, daring him to pull the trigger. He is very lethal, especially when he starts. Clarkson won’t find his way into the Hall of Fame like Westbrook, but as LA works to solve its many problems, swapping the latter for the former makes all the sense in the world.
