Novak Djokovic suffered a stunning early exit from the 2026 Cincinnati Open after Argentine player Thiago Agustín Tirante fought back to defeat the Serbian superstar 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 in the second round.

The match, played on August 15, turned into a major upset as Djokovic struggled physically in Cincinnati’s hot and humid conditions. Tirante kept his composure and completed the biggest victory of his career after two hours and 44 minutes.

Djokovic Makes Strong Start

Djokovic looked in control during the opening set. The 24-time Grand Slam champion won it comfortably 6-2, putting immediate pressure on Tirante.

However, the match changed dramatically in the second set. Djokovic began showing visible signs of physical discomfort, frequently bending over between points and struggling to maintain his usual intensity.

Tirante took advantage of the situation and levelled the match by winning the second set 6-4.

Tirante Completes Stunning Comeback

The Argentine continued to believe in his chances in the deciding set. Djokovic fought hard to stay in contention, but Tirante eventually made the crucial breakthrough at 4-4 before closing out the match 6-4.

The victory sent the world No. 50 into the third round and represented the biggest win of his professional career.

Djokovic Struggles in Cincinnati Conditions

The intense heat and humidity played a major role in the match. Djokovic required medical attention during the contest and appeared increasingly uncomfortable as the match progressed.

After the defeat, Djokovic explained that he has been dealing with a health issue for years and that the conditions in Cincinnati made the problem particularly difficult. He also suggested that this could potentially be his final appearance at the tournament.

A Huge Moment for Thiago Tirante

For Tirante, the victory is a significant milestone. The 25-year-old Argentine stayed focused despite facing one of the greatest players in tennis history.

His reward is a place in the Cincinnati Open third round, where he is scheduled to face Spain’s Martin Landaluce.

What This Means for Djokovic

Djokovic’s Cincinnati campaign ends much earlier than expected, raising questions about his physical condition ahead of the US Open.

Despite the setback, the Serbian remains one of the biggest names in men’s tennis and will now have to focus on recovery and preparation for the upcoming hard-court Grand Slam.

Final Result

Thiago Agustín Tirante defeated Novak Djokovic 2-6, 6-4, 6-4

The result will go down as one of the biggest upsets of the 2026 Cincinnati Open, while Tirante moves forward with the biggest win of his career.
