Alexander Zverev booked his place in the last 16 of the 2026 Cincinnati Open after overcoming a determined challenge from France’s Terence Atmane.

The German top seed won a tense contest 7-6(4), 7-6(8), with both sets decided by tiebreaks. Atmane repeatedly pushed Zverev, but the world No. 3 managed to stay composed when the pressure was at its highest.

Atmane Pushes Zverev All the Way

From the opening games, Atmane showed that he was not going to give Zverev an easy route into the next round. Both players protected their serves throughout the opening set, forcing the match into a tiebreak.

Zverev handled the first tiebreak better, taking it 7-4 to move ahead.

The second set followed a similar pattern. Neither player could create a decisive advantage on serve, and another tiebreak was required.

This time the drama went even deeper. Zverev eventually closed out the tiebreak 10-8, securing the match in straight sets.

Zverev Shows His Composure Under Pressure

The result was another important win for Zverev at Cincinnati. Rather than dominating with an easy scoreline, he had to find solutions during two extremely close sets.

His serving remained a major weapon. Match statistics show Zverev won 85% of his first-serve points and hit five aces during the contest.

The German also showed strong discipline in the crucial moments, particularly during the second-set tiebreak when Atmane threatened to force the match into a deciding set.

A Tough Start to Cincinnati for the Top Seed

Zverev had already been tested in his previous Cincinnati match, where he came from a set down to defeat Cameron Norrie 3-6, 6-3, 6-3.

His victory over Atmane therefore continues a demanding start to the tournament.

The Cincinnati Open is one of the key hard-court events leading into the US Open, making every match valuable as players look to build momentum before the final Grand Slam of the season.

What’s Next for Zverev?

With the victory over Atmane, Zverev moves into the fourth round, keeping his Cincinnati title hopes alive.

The biggest question now is whether the top seed can turn these hard-fought wins into a deep run. After surviving two difficult matches, Zverev will need to maintain his level as the competition becomes tougher.

For Atmane, the defeat ends a promising Cincinnati campaign, but his performance against one of the world’s leading players will give him plenty of confidence going forward.
