PICTURES: Carlos Alcaraz all smiles as he catches up with Juan Martin del Potro during off-season retreat

Carlos Alcaraz is currently unwinding in the Maldives, which has become a favored vacation hotspot among top tennis stars. The Spaniard is wrapping up an exceptional 2025 season, one in which he reclaimed the World No. 1 ranking and ultimately finished the year ahead of Jannik Sinner.

Alcaraz recently crossed paths with Juan Martín del Potro during his stay in the Maldives. The former Argentine star shared a photo of their meeting on X, where the two were seen posing together on the beach. Alcaraz appeared shirtless in green shorts, while del Potro sported a white shirt, blue shorts, black sunglasses, and a luxury watch — a relaxed tropical look that quickly caught fans’ attention.

“Siempre es lindo volver a verte amigo! 😊” Martin del Petro wrote on X. English translation: “It’s always great to see you again, my friend!”

Juan Martín del Potro is a former World No. 3 and the 2009 US Open champion, widely regarded as one of the most powerful hitters the sport has ever seen. Despite his immense talent, the Argentine’s career was repeatedly derailed by injuries, forcing long periods away from the tour. He officially retired in 2022 after playing an exhibition match against Novak Djokovic in Buenos Aires, marking an emotional farewell to the game.

Juan Martin del Potro lavishes praise on Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner’s modern rivalry

Tennis has unmistakably entered a new era, with Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner carrying forward the legacy left by the sport’s legendary Big Three — Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic. Over the past two seasons, Alcaraz and Sinner have dominated the Grand Slam stage, sharing every Major title between them and establishing a clear gap between themselves and the rest of the field.

Even Juan Martín del Potro has acknowledged the burgeoning rivalry between Alcaraz and Sinner, expressing his belief that Alcaraz is the ideal figure to carry men’s tennis into its next chapter after the era defined by the “Big Three.” Speaking at the presentation of the Roland Garros Junior Series in March 2023, del Potro said:

“One day the Big Three will not be there and it will be the turn of Alcaraz, Sinner or Holger Rune. Other youngsters will mark an era in tennis, but we have all learned so much from Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal. For many years, in my opinion, we will see something like this again. I’m very proud of my career, but I’ve never made it to the top because of the Big 3. Still, it’s nice to think that it was the three of them who denied me that dream.”

Juan Martin del Potro often reflects on how the era of the Big Three limited his Grand Slam count to just one. Yet he takes pride in knowing that whenever he fell short, it was to champions who truly deserved their victories.
