Carlos Alcaraz refuses to abandon his hometown football club Real Murcia even on holiday, shows his support from afar

Carlos Alcaraz finished the year as World No. 1 despite losing to Jannik Sinner in the final of the ATP Finals in Turin. During the offseason, he has been relaxing in the Maldives, where he even met former Argentine tennis star Juan Martín del Potro.

In his latest update, Alcaraz shared a relaxing morning moment from his breakfast table. In the photo, his phone lay horizontally on the table as he watched a match featuring his local football club, Real Murcia. Tagging the team’s official Instagram account and adding a heart emoji, Alcaraz made it clear he was cheering them on.

On Wednesday, the Spanish football club hosted Cádiz CF in the Copa del Rey (Second Round). Real Murcia won the match, 3-2. The home side was up by 3-0 before the halftime break, thanks to scoring from the trio of Alek Schalk, Pedro Benito, and David Vicente. The visitors stormed back with goals from Youssouf Diarra and Dawda Camara, but Real Murcia held them off in the end

Why is Carlos Alcaraz rooting for Real Murcia?

Carlos Alcaraz was born in El Palmar, Murcia, making Real Murcia his hometown club. Football holds a deep cultural significance in Spain, and Alcaraz has frequently shown his support for the team.

There have been several occasions where the World No. 1 has proudly backed the club. In June, he was spotted wearing a Real Murcia CF jersey before a practice session, and he even wore it over his training gear at Roland Garros. He also often uses his social media—just as he did on Wednesday—to share his thoughts and support for the club.

Alcaraz was also honored by his hometown tennis club, Real Murcia Club de Tenis 1919, which awarded him its Golden Badge of Honor in November. Club president Antonio Saura said

During an interview with CLAY earlier this year, Alcaraz spoke about his deep affection for football, saying:

you can have a home for a long time… “Footballers (…) usually always end up going home to sleep. We have to go from hotel to hotel, week after week, and we can’t get used to where we are. I’d probably take that from football.”
