“At one point I was like, ‘I might not win a game'” – Jessica Pegula and Madison Keys debriefs mixed opening start to the WTA season Down Under

The WTA Tour is officially back after the off-season break. Jessica Pegula and Madison Keys kicked off their campaigns at the Brisbane International, while Desirae Krawczyk competed in the event for the first time, having usually represented the USA at the United Cup. Alongside Jennifer Brady, they shared their reactions to the start of the season on the Players Box Podcast, reflecting on the highs and lows of competition returning.

“It didn’t feel long enough—what, like three weeks? That four-week break flew by,” she joked. “But it was really nice to be back. It’s kind of like starting a new year at school—there are people you miss, and others you think, ‘Oh God, you again,’” she laughed. She added that it felt great to be competing again and being back on tour, especially as it marked her first appearance at the Brisbane International, having previously played the United Cup every year. “Overall, it was a really good time.” 🎾😊

“It definitely went from zero to 100. I’m just happy to be back playing,” she admitted. “No matter how much you practice, you can never truly simulate a match. The soreness, the stress—everything is completely different. Practice just doesn’t come close.

”That rust showed in Madison Keys’ return, as she went on to lose in straight sets to world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka. Still, she summed up the feeling many players know too well: “That first match back, even after a few weeks, you wake up the next morning wondering why everything hurts—your hip, your butt… just everything.” 🎾😅
